The frame should not be the rainscreen
During construction, temporary weather exposure must be managed; in service, membranes, cavities, cladding, roofing and drainage should protect the structure. Persistent leakage is a building defect that should be investigated, not normal frame maintenance.
Interfaces create risk
Base connections, external penetrations, cut edges, fixings, dissimilar metals and treated materials require appropriate detailing. Use the specified components and avoid uncontrolled substitutions.
Moisture must have a route out
Drainage, ventilation where designed, vapour strategy and leak control prevent water being trapped around the frame. Closing wet construction into the envelope can create problems regardless of structural material.
Maintenance belongs to the finished building
Inspect roofing, rainwater goods, sealants, cladding junctions, openings and penetrations on a sensible schedule. Early repair protects the frame and the rest of the envelope.
